Real Sociedad, Athletic triumph on opening day

UEFA Champions League play-off entrants Real Sociedad de Fútbol kicked off the new season with a victory over Getafe CF, while Athletic Club and Valencia CF also won.

UEFA Champions League play-off entrants Real Sociedad de Fútbol began the new season with a home win against Getafe CF, while Athletic Club and Valencia CF also triumphed.

Real Sociedad will go into their UEFA Champions League play-off against Olympique Lyonnais full of confidence after securing an opening-day victory over Getafe. Former Arsenal FC striker Carlos Vela broke the deadlock three minutes before half-time and Haris Seferovic put the result beyond doubt in the 70th minute.

Athletic made a similarly good start to the campaign. Markel Susaeta gave them a 28th-minute lead at Valladolid and although Patrick Ebert equalised just three minutes later, Spanish Under-21 international Iker Muniain clinched maximum points five minutes after the break. In the day's late game UEFA Europa League group stage entrants Valencia squeezed past Málaga CF thanks to a Ricardo Costa goal.
