Madrid and Fiorentina reach cup finals

Real Madrid CF cruised through to their 39th Copa del Rey final after two early Cristiano Ronaldo penalties killed off any hope of a Club Atlético de Madrid revival, with Los Colchoneros already trailing their city rivals 3-0 following the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Ronaldo stepped up after being fouled to fire in his first after seven minutes, and produced a near-identical conversion – low and to the left – to make it 2-0 on 17 minutes following a clumsy challenge on Gareth Bale. The only consolation for Diego Simeone's cup holders was that Daniel Aranzubia denied the Portuguese striker a hat-trick, blocking his half-volley 18 minutes from time.

Real Sociedad de Fútbol must overturn a 2-0 deficit at home if they are to overcome FC Barcelona in the other semi-final decider on Wednesday.

Coppa Italia
ACF Fiorentina took their place in the Coppa Italia final, beating Udinese Calcio 2-0 at home to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit. The Viola went ahead after 14 minutes with a superb volley from left-back Manuel Pasqual. Antonio Di Natale headed against the post for Udinese, and Vincenzo Montella's side pressed their advantage just after the hour with another great strike, this time by Juan Cuadrado. In added time, Udinese had Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu and Maurizio Domizzi sent off but still went close to taking the game to extra-time.

SSC Napoli trail 3-2 going into the home leg of their semi-final against AS Roma tomorrow, with the victors to meet six-time winners Fiorentina in the 3 May final.

German Cup
Borussia Dortmund staked the first place in this season's German Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading the winner after Sebastian Kehl flicked on a Henrikh Mkhitaryan corner with seven minutes left. It had been a typically tough cup game, with Jürgen Klopp's side producing the better chances. "We knew it would be hard, but I think we deserved the win", said Kehl. "It is a set-piece we have rehearsed before." The teams will meet again in Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Coupe de France
Fourth-division AS Cannes claimed their second Ligue 1 scalp of the season in the round of 16, with Montpellier Hérault SC – the side that accounted for Paris Saint-Germain in the last 32 – going the same way as AS Saint-Étienne did two rounds earlier. Belkacem Zobiri struck the decisive goal in the 119th minute. Angers SCO also needed the additional 30 minutes to get the better of Ligue 2 rivals CA Bastia, prevailing 4-2, and LOSC Lille v SM Caen was another marathon. With the sides level at 3-3 at the end of the 120 minutes, LOSC won 6-5 on penalties, Mathias Autret missing in sudden death for Ligue 2 Caen.
