Lorenzo Insigne scored twice in six first-half minutes and substitute Dries Martens made sure in added time as SSC Napoli defeated ACF Fiorentina 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome to win the Coppa Italia for the fifth time.

Aiming for a second cup in three years, Napoli were in control after 11 minutes, Insigne making the most of a perfect pass from Marek Hamšík. Six minutes later Gonzalo Higuaín found Insigne again, and his shot deflected in off Nenad Tomović. Juan Vargas pulled one back on 28 minutes, though, with a fizzing finish.

In the second half, Vincenzo Montella's Fiorentina – aiming for a seventh win in ten finals – failed to make the most of their chances, even after Napoli's Gökhan Inler was dismissed with 11 minutes to play. Josip Iličič fired wide with only Pepe Reina to beat and despite Giuseppe Rossi's return after a four-month absence a second goal remained elusive for Fiorentina, with a precise low shot from Belgian international Mertens finally ending their resistance.

"It was an entertaining match," said Napoli coach Rafael Benítez. "We started pretty well and after making it 2-0 things seemed to be easy for us, but then Fiorentina scored and made our lives hard until the end. After the dismissal, we regrouped and kept playing good football, and scored the third in the end. Now It's time to celebrate, but then we have to start thinking about the Cagliari [Calcio] game, as there is more to do [in the league]."

Napoli will now look to confirm a UEFA Champions League play-off place at Fiorentina's expense. They sit third in Serie A, eight points ahead of the Viola with three games to go.
