Athletic Club have snapped up former Real Sociedad de Fútbol striker Borja Viguera from Deportivo Alavés for a reported €1m.

Top scorer in the Spanish second tier with 25 goals for struggling Alavés, the 27-year-old Viguera has agreed a deal with the Leones that runs until June 2017 and features a buy-out clause of €30m.

A Real Sociedad youth product, the forward made 14 league appearances for the Basque team before loan spells with Club Gimnàstic de Tarragona and Albacete Balompié. He arrives at the San Mamés having registered 38 goals in 75 Spanish second division games for Alavés over the past two campaigns.

Ernesto Valverde's Athletic will look to return to the UEFA Champions League proper for the first time since 1998/99 when the fourth-placed Liga finishers contest a play-off in August.
