GDR great Buschner passes away

FC Carl Zeiss Jena have announced that their former coach and player Georg Buschner, who took charge of the national team for eleven years, had died aged 81.

Famous win
Buschner played in defence for the club (then SC Motor Jena) and won six caps for his country before stepping up to become coach in 1958. An East German title followed five years later and two more, after the name change, in 1968 and 1970. Those feats earned Buschner the national team job, and he secured an Olympic bronze in 1972 and gold at the 1976 Games in Montreal. In between, the country recorded their most famous victory – a 1-0 triumph against hosts and rivals West Germany at the 1974 FIFA World Cup in Hamburg.
