UC Sampdoria have confirmed that Siniša Mihajlović will step down as Serbia coach to replace Delio Rossi in the Blucerchiati dugout.

A distinguished midfielder as a player, Mihajlović took the Serbia reins in May 2012 but subsequently failed to secure FIFA World Cup qualification. The 44-year-old played for Sampdoria between 1994 and 1998 as well as representing AS Roma, SS Lazio and FC Internazionale Milano in Italy. He also won the European Champion Clubs' Cup with FK Crvena zvezda.

Formerly coach of Bologna FC, Calcio Catania and ACF Fiorentina, plus assistant to Roberto Mancini at Inter, Mihajlović takes over from the man who succeeded him at the Viola helm two years ago. Sampdoria are 18th in Serie A, three points off the foot of the table. Rossi, 52, was dismissed last week after presiding over just two victories in 12 league games this season.
