Ecuador peg back England

England continued their preparations for the FIFA World Cup with an entertaining draw against Ecuador.

The South American side took an eighth-minute lead through Enner Valencia but Wayne Rooney's 39th goal for England levelled matters. Rickie Lambert struck early in the second half to make it 2-1 only for Michael Arroyo's ferocious 70th-minute effort to leave the contest all square again.

England started purposefully but fell behind when Walter Ayovi's left-wing cross arced in between Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling and was met by a thumping header from Valencia. The lead could have been doubled had Ben Foster not sprawled at the feet of Jefferson Montero as England's defence was again bisected.

Roy Hodgson's men regrouped with Frank Lampard, playing his first game since announcing his departure from Chelsea FC, calling Máximo Banguera into action. The equaliser duly arrived when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's teasing cross was back-heeled against the post by Lambert before Rooney scrambled in the loose ball on 29 minutes, and England could have led before the interval had Banguera not repelled Oxlade-Chamberlain's drive.

England did not have to wait long after the interval to complete the turnaround, however, as Ross Barkley embarked on a mazy run before teeing up Lambert to hammer a low finish across Banguera in the 52nd minute. Valencia spurned a presentable chance to restore parity as he scuffed an effort against the upright but Arroyo made no such mistake, creating enough space on the edge of the area to rifle into the top corner.

Ecuador's Antonio Valencia and England substitute Raheem Sterling were sent off following an altercation late on but no side could conjure a decisive breakthrough. England's final warm-up game is against Honduras on Saturday, a week before they open their World Cup campaign against Italy in Group D.
