Marco Reus could miss the start of the UEFA Champions League season after the Borussia Dortmund midfielder's injury turned out to be worse than first thought.

The 25-year-old was ruled out of the FIFA World Cup at the weekend after twisting his left ankle during Germany's 6-1 friendly defeat of Armenia on Friday. However, further examinations have revealed additional damage to heel ligaments, adding around three months to his spell on the sidelines.

That would not only mean he sits out the start of the 2014/15 Bundesliga on 22 August, but, potentially, UEFA Champions League matchday one on 16/17 September. "I currently can't say what happens next," Reus said. "That will have to be decided."
