Second-half goals from Andrei Vorobei (2) and Nigerian international striker Julius Aghahowa gave Shakhtar a comfortable win and enabled them to take full advantage of Dynamo's goalless draw with FC Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih.
Donetsk lose ground
Third-placed FC Metalurh Donetsk lost more ground on the top two as they lost 2-0 to FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk at the Meteor stadium. Oleh Shelaiev and Hennadi Moroz delivered all three points for Dnipro who move into sixth place. FC Metalurh Zaporizhzhya recorded a 1-0 win over FC Polihraftechnica Olexandria to stay fifth, while FC Arsenal Kyiv beat FC Metalurh Mariupol 2-1 and FC Zakarpattia Uzhgorod ran out 2-0 winners against FC Vorskla Poltava.
Metalist defeated
FC Metalist Kharkiv slip down to seventh after losing 2-0 to FC Tavria Simferopol, who scored both their goals from the penalty spot. Vasili Gigiadze converted both spot-kicks, the second of which saw Metalist reduced to ten men when Volodymyr Braila was dismissed.
