Spain round-up: Ronaldo rampant on Madrid debut

Ronaldo scored twice on his Real Madrid CF debut in a 5-2 win against Deportivo Alavés.

Ronado turned on the style in his long-awaited Real Madrid CF debut as he came off the bench to score twice in the European champions' 5-2 home Primera División win against Deportivo Alavés.

Scoring within seconds
Madrid already led 2-1 by the time of the Brazilian's 64th-minute introduction, Zinedine Zidane's spectacular first-minute opener and Luis Figo's penalty having been pegged back by Magno. But once Ronaldo was on he took over, scoring after a cross from the left within a minute of his arrival, and adding a second a quarter-hour later, after a fine pass from Steve McManaman. In between those goals, Figo had made it 4-1, and Ivan Alonso scored a late consolation.

Chance to go top
Madrid could now go top if they win their delayed game against Real Betis Balompié on Wednesday, although the Seville side lead 1-0 with 43 minutes gone in a game halted due to floodlight failure.

Derby draw
Betis themselves were held 1-1 at Sevilla FC. Joaquín gave Betis the lead in the derby on 17 minutes, but his team-mate Juanito scored an own goal 21 minutes from the end to ensure a deserved point for Sevilla.

First-place Celta
RC Celta de Vigo are back at the top after overhauling Valencia CF with a 1-0 win at the Mestalla stadium. Brazilian midfield player Vagner scored in added time to ensure his side replaced their hosts in first place, Valencia dropping to fifth.

Sociedad second
Real Sociedad are second, level on points with Celta, as they beat Real Valladolid 2-1, all three goals coming in a six-minute second-half spell. Nihat Kahveci and Valeri Karpin scored on 65 and 68 minutes for Sociedad, with Gonzalo Colsa responding for the visitors.

Guerrero double
RC Deportivo La Coruña slipped to sixth on nine points after a surprise 2-0 defeat at home to Real Racing Club Santander. Javi Guerrero scored once in each half to delight the Santander fans.

Barcelona held
FC Barcelona were held 2-2 at home by Club Atlético Osasuna - a match the visitors twice led in the first half. Gerardo Rivero's second-minute goal was cancelled out by Thiago Motta, while Patrick Kluivert levelled again on the stroke of half-time, seconds after Leonel Gancedohad restored Osasuna's advantage.

Villarreal denied
Elsewhere, bottom-placed RCD Espanyol's plight was not eased by a 2-0 loss to RCD Mallorca, while Málaga CF claimed third place by beating Club Atlético de Madrid 3-1. Rayo Vallecano came from two goals behind to draw 2-2 with Villarreal CF, who remain without a win.
