News round-up: Sebastian Deisler is out of action for FC Bayern München and Germany, while Cádiz CF must make do without Matías Pavoni.

FC Bayern München will miss Sebastian Deisler for Sunday's Bundesliga match against FC Schalke 04. The 26-year-old German international has injured his right knee and is expected to sit out his country's friendly against the United States next Wednesday too. Deisler, who has twice suffered cruciate ligament damage to the same knee, faces further tests on the injury.

Argentinian midfielder Matías Pavoni will miss much of the remainder of the Spanish season after injuring his ankle in the first minute of Cádiz CF's 1-0 defeat at Athletic Club Bilbao on Sunday. Although tests in Bilbao revealed no fracture, further examinations yesterday in Cadiz showed that the 25-year-old had sprained ligaments in his left ankle.

Board member Erwin Göbel will step up to become chairman of 1. FC Kaiserslautern when present incumbent René C Jäggi stands down in the summer. Once hailed as the German club's saviour, Jäggi announced in November that he would be leaving at the end of the season after being blamed for Kaiserlautern's struggles over the past two campaigns.

Celtic FC midfielder Roy Keane has hinted that he might hang up his boots at the end of the season. The 34-year-old former Manchester United FC and Republic of Ireland captain signed an 18-month deal with the Scottish league leaders in December but a long-standing hip problem may force him into a rethink. "I will see how my hip is bearing up in the summer," Keane said. "It is important to be fair to myself and the club if it is affecting me."

There will be a minute's silence ahead of Feyenoord's match at AZ Alkmaar on Sunday in honour of Feyenoord midfielder Alfred Schreuder's daughter Anouk who died aged six yesterday from a brain tumour. A club statement said: "The board, technical staff, players, personnel and fans offer our support to Alfred, his wife and children following their loss." There will also be a silence before NAC Breda-BV Vitesse as Schreuder spent six years at NAC.

Maccabi Haifa FC remain on course for an unprecedented treble in Israel after cruising to victory in the Toto Cup final. The league leaders, who hold an eleven-point advantage in the Premier League and are in the Israeli Cup quarter-finals, overcame FC Ashdod 3-0 at the National Stadium in Ramat-Gan. Shlomi Arbeitman and Roberto Colautti scored in the first half before Tomer Hemad sealed the win in added time.

FC Metalurh Donetsk have named Stepan Matvyiv as their interim coach following the resignation of Olexandr Sevidov. The 38-year-old Matvyiv is promoted from the reserve ranks, having previously coached FC Borysfen Boryspil. Metalurh are fifth in the Ukrainian top flight.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fernandinho and FC Kryvbas Krivyi Rih defender Mykhailo Starostiak have both received three-match bans for violent conduct during the weekend's Ukrainian Premier League games. Fernandinho struck an opponent in the face after the final whistle of Shakhtar's 2-0 defeat of FC Metalist Kharkiv, while Starostiak head-butted an FC Arsenal Kyiv player during Kryvbas's 2-1 home loss.

Górnik Zabrze have re-signed former KSP Polonia Warszawa striker Sebastian Olszar on a contract until the end of the season. The 24-year-old was a free agent after spells with VfB Admira Wacker Mödling in Austria, Portsmouth FC and Coventry City FC in England, and Polonia during the 2004/05 campaign.

Neither Wisła Płock nor Lech Poznań were able to make the breakthrough in the first leg of their Polish Cup semi-final, played at the KSP Polonia Warszawa stadium due to the state of the pitch in Plock. The second leg will take place in Poznan on 22 March.

Meanwhile, MKS Cracovia SSA must play their next two Polish Ekstraklasa home games behind closed doors, and have been fined €13,000, after poor organisation and unruly behaviour by their supporters marred Sunday's 1-1 derby draw against Wisla Kraków.

The Russian Cup quarter-final lineup is complete after PFC CSKA Moskva defeated FC Spartak Kostroma 3-0 to win 8-0 on aggregate, and FC Lokomotiv Moskva were awarded a walkover victory against FC Lokomotiv Chita. FC Spartak Moskva face Lokomotiv, CSKA Moskva take on FC Rubin Kazan, FC Dinamo Moskva tackle FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast, and FC Torpedo Moskva meet FC Zenit St. Petersburg.

BSC Young Boys will encounter second-division FC Sion in the Swiss Cup final on 17 April after beating FC Zürich 4-1 in the semi-finals. Young Boys, who have lifted the trophy six times but last tasted success in 1986/87, overcame Zürich thanks to two goals from João Paulo and one each from Everson and Mario Raimondi. Sion booked their ticket after winning 1-0 against second-division rivals FC Winterthur.

SL Benfica have bowed out of the Portuguese Cup, losing 1-0 at home to Vitória SC in the quarter-finals. The only goal was scored by Dário. Elsewhere, FC Porto ousted SC Marítimo 2-1 after extra time with Benni McCarthy scoring twice, and Sporting Clube de Portugal claimed a 2-0 victory against A. Académica de Coimbra. Holders Vitória FC also needed an additional 30 minutes to defeat Boavista FC 2-1.
