One more year for Litmanen

Finland striker Jari Litmanen has signed up for a second season back at AFC Ajax.

Under contract
The Finnish international returned to Ajax from Liverpool FC last August on a one-year deal but has taken up the option of another 12 months at the Amsterdam Arena. Litmanen, who last week became Ajax's record European goalscorer, will now be under contract until 1 July 2004.

'Very delighted'
Ajax technical director Leo Beenhakker said: "We had very positive talks about his role next season. An experienced player like Litmanen can be of huge value in a young team like Ajax. Everyone at the club is delighted he will be with us for another season."

Seven-year spell
Litmanen has made 19 appearances this term, scoring eight goals. He first played for the club between 1992 and 1999 before leaving to join FC Barcelona. The 32-year-old's new deal completes a happy week in which he scored a record 22nd goal for Finland in the friendly defeat of Iceland.
