Timely Bent bruises Arsenal bid

Darren Bent struck in the fifth minute of added time to earn Sunderland AFC a 1-1 draw at home against ten-man Arsenal FC, on a day when Tottenham Hotspur FC clawed their way back to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers FC 3-1.

With champions Chelsea FC not in action until Sunday's meeting with Blackpool FC, Arsenal were looking to go top, but they went ahead in bizarre circumstances on 13 minutes as Anton Ferdinand's attempted clearance struck Cesc Fàbregas's foot and looped into the net. The Gunners' captain soon went off injured, however, and his side were rocked by Alex Song's 55th-minute dismissal, with Tomáš Rosický then blazing a penalty over before Bent's last-gasp intervention.

Rafael van der Vaart sparked Tottenham's recovery with his first goal for the club from a spot-kick on 76 minutes, after Steven Fletcher had put the visitors ahead. Roman Pavlyuchenko registered three minutes from the end and fellow substitute Alan Hutton scored in added time to seal the result.

There was a first Premier League goal for Hatem Ben Arfa too as his thunderous effort on the stroke of half-time secured Newcastle United FC a 1-0 victory at Everton. The only other team to triumph were West Bromwich Albion FC, who fought back to down Birmingham City FC 3-1, with 1-1 draws in the other three games – including a first point of the season for West Ham United FC at Stoke City FC.
