Goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus has signed a short-term contract with AZ Alkmaar as the club look to cover for the absences of Joey Didulica and Khalid Sinouh.

Goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus has signed a short-term contract with AZ Alkmaar as the Eredivise club look to cover for the absences of Joey Didulica and Khalid Sinouh.

Injured goalkeepers
With their first-choice custodians injured, the 37-year-old former Dutch international has joined AZ as a free agent until the winter break. Both Didulica and Sinouh are injured, giving the former Roda JC, PSV Eindhoven, Manchester City FC and Rangers FC goalkeeper the chance to make a 400th league appearance; he has previously played 350 games in the Dutch league and 49 in the Scottish Premier League for Rangers.

'Short notice'
"We are glad to have agreed a deal with an experienced goalkeeper like Ronald Waterreus at such short notice," explained AZ's director of football Marcel Brands. "Formally, we have to offer him a contract until the summer but we think that our goalkeeping problem will be solved during the winter break." AZ are currently second in the Eredivisie.
