The goalkeeper in the German side that won the 1980 UEFA European Championship, Schumacher earned 76 caps for his national team, but is most infamously remembered for his collision with French player Patrick Battiston in the semi-final of the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Battiston, minus three teeth, was carried off to hospital to receive emergency treatment after swallowing his tongue, while Schumacher ended up as the German hero in the subsequent penalty shoot-out.
Schumacher, who made 464 German Bundesliga appearances, spent 15 seasons with Köln, with whom he won the Bundesliga once and the DFB-Pokal on three occasions. Transferred to Schalke for the 1987/88 season and then to Bayern ahead of the 1991/92 season, he ended his playing career with one appearance for a Dortmund side that won the 1995/96 Bundesliga. Schumacher went on to be goalkeeping coach at Dortmund, then head coach of Fortuna Köln and assistant coach at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
