FFU to investigate match
Friday 26 April 2002After announcing their intention to clean up the game, the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) will investigate the first case of alleged match-fixing in the Ukrainian first division.
Favourites to advance
FC Polissya Zhytomir, who are one of the favourites to advance to the Premier League at the end of the season, are charged with fixing a match against FC Borysfen Boryspil. Polissya won to reinforce their position in third - high enough to secure promotion should they finish there at the end of the season.
"Very slow tempo"
FFU delegate Volodymyr Foschiy wrote in his report to the association, that the 'fair play' criteria were not observed by the two sides. "The game between Polissya and Borysfen was played at a very slow tempo, with very few tackles and challenges," his report read. "There were only ten fouls committed in the game by both sides. It must be noted that the hosts, FC Borysfen Boryspil were very passive."
Possible sanctions
The case will be brought before the disciplinary committee soon, and the professional league will also hold a meeting to address 'fair play' problems in the country. Polissya are faced with possible suspension or they may be stripped of points if found guilty of the alleged offence.
