Ulivieri takes over at Torino

Saturday 26 October 2002

Torino Calcio on Friday appointed Renzo Ulivieri as their new coach after sacking Giancarlo Camolese earlier in the afternoon.

One-year contract
Camolese was fired as a consequence of Thursday night's 2-1 home defeat by Empoli FC in the Coppa Italia that meant a 3-2 exit on aggregate. Ulivieri, who signed a one-year contract, will start his new job on Monday and former Italy and Torino midifielder Renato Zaccarelli will act as caretaker coach for Torino's trip to Reggina Calcio tomorrow.

'Best regards to Camolese'
Ulivieri made his coaching debut in Serie A back in 1980 with Perugia Calcio. The 61-year-old was out of job after being sacked by AC Parma last season. "I'm really happy," he said. "I wanted to return to work on the pitch. I have seen some of Torino's matches on TV and I think they are a good side. They were just a bit tense because of their bad start to the season. I want to give my best regards to Camolese, a coach that I really respect."

Consecutive promotions
The highlights of Ulivieri's coaching career came with Bologna FC between 1994 and 1998, when he took the Rossoblu from Serie C to Serie A in two consecutive seasons and led them to seventh and eighth place in the top flight. After five rounds of Serie A, Torino are third from bottom, with three points, just ahead of Reggina Calcio and Atalanta BC.
