Good night for Turkish trio

Round-up 2: Gençlerbirligi SK and Gaziantepspor recorded fine wins while Trabzonspor drew in Spain.

A trio of Turkish sides enjoyed a good night of first round first-leg action as the UEFA Cup proper got under way.

Two for Youla
Gençlerbirligi SK recorded a fine home win against Blackburn Rovers FC, winning 3-1. Striker Souleymane Youla found the net twice, after Josip Skoko had opened the scoring and Blackburn midfield player Brett Emerton had temporarily reduced the deficit to 2-1.

Late winner
Hasan Ozer struck an 87th-minute winner as Gaziantepspor secured a 1-0 win at home to Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC while Trabzonspor earned an excellent 0-0 draw in Spain against Villarreal CF. The one low for Turkey came with Malatyaspor, going down 2-0 at home to FC Basel with brothers Murat Yakin and Hakan Yakin both on target.

Narrow lead
Elsewhere, Udinese Calcio put an indifferent start to the Serie A season behind them with a 1-0 win away to SV Austria Salzburg. Despite having taken only three points from their first three league games, striker Dino Fava Passaro's goal nine minutes before half-time gave the Italian side a narrow lead ahead of the second leg.

Shyshchenko strike
Another Italian side, Parma AC, needed a 67th-minute strike from Brazilian international forward Adriano to rescue a 1-1 draw away to Ukrainian outfit FC Metalurh Donetsk, who had taken the lead with a Serhiy Shyshchenko goal a minute before half-time.

Contrasting fortunes
Todor Kolev scored the only goal as PFC Levski Sofia earned a 1-0 win at Hapoel Ramat-Gan FC, but Levski's city rivals PFC CSKA Sofia face an uphill battle to qualify for the next round after a 1-1 home draw with FC Torpedo Moskva. Striker Velizar Dimitrov gave CSKA an 18th-minute lead but Igor Semshov brought the visitors level with 13 minutes remaining.

Away goal
Greek side Panionios NFC earned a 2-1 first-leg victory against FC Nordsjælland thanks to two goals in three first-half minutes, from Mico Smiljanic and Adam Majewski. However, Bashkim Ziberi's effort midway through the second period gave the Danish side a valuable away goal.

Sartid setback
FK Sartid had Dragan Paunovic sent off after just 19 minutes and went on to lose 2-1 at home to SK Slavia Praha, who scored twice late in the first half through Tomáš Došek and Radek Bejbl from the penalty spot, although Sasa Kocic's last-minute goal gave Sartid hope for the second leg.

Significant strike
Andrej Kvas also scored in the final minute, to give NK Publikum a potentially crucial away goal in a 2-1 defeat at Maccabi Haifa FC, whose goals came from Badeer Valid and Yaniv Katan.

Dinamo delight
Elsewhere, NK Dinamo Zagreb recovered from a goal down to defeat MTK Hungária FC 3-1, the visitors taking the lead through Sandor Torghelle. Goals from Eduardo da Silva, Jasmin Agic and Goce Sedloski turned the match in the home team's favour, although Dinamo lost defender Dino Drpic to a late red card.

Hertha held
Hertha BSC Berlin drew 0-0 at home to Groclin Grodzisk Wielkopolski, Mattias Jonson's goal proved enough for Brøndby IF to defeat FK Viktoria Žižkov and RC Lens, who qualified for the UEFA Cup through the fair play draw, won 1-0 away to FK Cementarnica 55 thanks to Pape Bouba Diop's last-gasp strike.

Diarra decisive
Another Ligue 1 side were also victorious on their travels as Sigamory Diarra's goal on the stroke of half-time gave FC Sochaux-Montbéliard a 1-0 win at Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47, while Austrian side Grazer AK will feel confident of progressing after drawing 0-0 away to Vålerenga IF.
