Kehl set for Bayern switch

Sebastian Kehl has agreed to join FC Bayern München from SC Freiburg, according to the German champions.

Germany defender Sebastian Kehl has agreed to join FC Bayern München from SC Freiburg, according to the German champions

Deisler deal done
If the move happens, Kehl would be the latest young 1. Bundesliga talent to sign for Bayern after Sebastian Deisler decided to move from Hertha BSC Berlin next summer. "We have received a commitment from Sebastian Kehl to play for Bayern from summer 2002 or 2003," said general manager Uli Hoeness.

Two caps
The 21-year-old defender, who has two caps, would have to decide whether or not to join Bayern immediately after the 2002 FIFA World Cup - to coincide with the arrival of Deisler - or see out his contract at Freiburg, which runs until 30 June 2003. "Sebastian Kehl alone will decide on the timing of the move," added Hoeness.

Strength to strength
If Kehl does elect to move to Munich at the end of this season, his new employer would be obliged to pay Freiburg to release him from his current contract. Kehl moved from second-division side Hannover 96 to Freiburg in 2000 and since then, under the guidance of coach Volker Finke, has gone from strength to strength.

Restructuring plan
An Under-21 international, he was promoted to the full German squad after only 25 Bundesliga appearances. Bayern see the acquisition of Deisler and Kehl as important elements of their restructuring plan. "It is our intention to progressively introduce new young German players to the squad," said Hoeness.

Ballack news
Bayern also expect to learn in the near future whether Bayer 04 Leverkusen midfield player Michael Ballack will be joining the club."There will be a decision in 14 days or three weeks," said Hoeness. German international Ballack's current contract at Leverkusen runs until 2003 but contains a buy-out clause.
