Article body
Injury problems
The 25-year-old Bridges, who was born in the north-east of England, joined Leeds from Sunderland AFC for €7m in 1999. Bridges scored 19 league goals in his debut season with Leeds but his Elland Road career has since been blighted by injury, limiting him to one Premiership start this term. Newcastle will play Vålerenga IF in the third round of the UEFA Cup.
Caldwell chance
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Scottish international defender Caldwell has joined Leeds on loan for the rest of the season. Caldwell has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Newcastle, making just two starts this season. Leeds are currently bottom of the Premiership, six points adrift of safety.
