Lisandro double puts Lyon in charge

Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 FC Girondins de Bordeaux
Two Lisandro goals put Lyon in command, but Marouane Chamakh kept the visitors in contention.

Two goals from Lisandro ensured Olympique Lyonnais have a wonderful opportunity to reach their first ever UEFA Champions League semi-final after Claude Puel's team got the better of domestic rivals FC Girondins de Bordeaux in a pulsating game.

Bordeaux's chances of an eighth straight victory in the competition diminished in the tenth minute when Lisandro opened the scoring, and though Marouane Chamakh quickly levelled, Michel Bastos re-established the hosts' advantage before the break. Although Laurent Blanc's team rallied in the second half, Hugo Lloris was in stunning form, and when he was beaten the crossbar denied Wendel an equaliser. Lisandro's 76th-minute penalty capped a wonderful night for Lyon, soured only by the yellow cards picked up by Lisandro and Sidney Govou who will miss the second leg in south-west France on 7 April.

This may have been a contest between two Ligue 1 teams yet there was a gala feel to the occasion as the two most successful French clubs of recent times jousted for European supremacy in front of a vibrant crowd. Les Gones had come up short in their three previous quarter-finals but they enjoyed the perfect start here. Michaël Ciani showed nerves by heading Aly Cissokho's long ball tentatively into Mathieu Bodmer's path, and the defender's driven cross was flicked in by an alert Lisandro.

Fears this might be a tight affair proved unfounded as the contest unfolded at an electric pace. It took Les Girondins only four minutes to draw level, Yoann Gourcuff brilliantly turning past Jérémy Toulalan and crossing for Chamakh to nod in at the far post. The hosts were not deterred, though, Bastos curling a good opportunity wide before César Delgado was sent racing clear only to be foiled by the onrushing Cédric Carrasso.

Yet Lloris was not to be outdone by one of his understudies in the French national team, the OL custodian producing a stunning reflex stop to parry Yoan Gouffran's back-heeled effort at close range. Chances were flowing at both ends, Chamakh heading narrowly wide before Bastos punished more hesitant Bordeaux defending on 32 minutes. Unmarked at the far post, the Brazilian collected Benoît Trémoulinas's miscued header, jinked inside and curled a powerful shot into the top corner.

Blanc looked unimpressed by his side's defending but it was a far more solid Bordeaux that came out in the second period. With Lyon's midfield creators increasingly starved of space, the French champions began to get on top. Only another remarkable Lloris intervention kept Bordeaux at bay, the 23-year-old thrusting out his right hand to stop Chamakh's close-range volley just after the hour. The powerful Moroccan international was providing a major threat, forcing Lloris into a further, more regulation save with another header just seconds later.

Jean II Makoun squandered an excellent chance on 69 minutes, miscuing with only Carrasso to beat, before Wendel thundered a volley against the crossbar at the other end. Bordeaux deserved better, but when Matthieu Chalmé blocked Cissokho's cross with his arm, the outstanding Lisandro stepped up to coolly send the goalkeeper the wrong way from the spot and ensure Lyon start as favourites to progress to the last four.
