Hamburger SV will be without in-form midfielder Marcell Jansen for their UEFA Europa League quarter-final against R. Standard de Liège after the German international tore a muscle in his left ankle.

Jansen, who has been in scintillating form recently, suffered the injury in training on Thursday. "The diagnosis is a bitter blow," he said. "We're going to decide exactly how to treat it over the weekend but until then I'll be wearing a cast to limit the swelling and I can't put any pressure on my left foot. Obviously the timing is unfortunate because we have some important games coming up and of course there is the World Cup squad to consider."

The 24-year-old spent much of the early part of the season on the treatment table, but has recorded an impressive six goals and four assists since his return in early November. He has also scored three times in the UEFA Europa League, including strikes in each of the last two rounds against PSV Eindhoven and RSC Anderlecht respectively. HSV expect Jansen to be missing for a few weeks.
