Torn muscle hampers Márquez

FC Barcelona could be without defender Rafael Márquez for their UEFA Cup tie against Brøndby IF.

FC Barcelona could be without first-choice central defender Rafael Márquez for both legs of the club's UEFA Cup tie against Brøndby IF after he suffered a thigh muscle tear at the weekend.

Costly collision
The 25-year-old Mexican collided with his own goalkeeper Víctor Valdés during Saturday's 1-0 win at Valencia CF and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Scans carried out by Barça's medical team on Sunday detected a 1.5cm tear to muscle fibres in the player's left thigh - a condition that will keep him out of action for two to three weeks.

UEFA Cup blow
Márquez has no chance of appearing in Thursday's first leg against Brøndby and will almost certainly miss the return leg at the Nou Camp on 3 March.
