Rosenborg BK have announced that Jan Jönsson will be the club's next coach, with the 50-year-old Swede to take up the role on 1 January 2011.

Jönsson will move from his position as boss at Rosenborg's top-flight rivals Stabæk Fotball, having signed a contract until the end of the 2014 season at the Lerkendal. The Norwegian champions' chairman Terje Svendsen said: "Jönsson has shown at Stabæk that he likes his teams to go forward and play good attacking football. That fits in well with our philosophy."

Rosenborg have been looking for a long-term successor to Erik Hamrén, who left the Trondheim outfit in May to lead Sweden. Legendary coach Nils Arne Eggen was put in temporary charge and Rosenborg earmarked Jönsson as the man to take the reins, so much so they were willing to let him see out the last six months of his Stabæk deal.

Jönsson is in his sixth campaign at Stabæk, whom he guided to a maiden Norwegian Tippeligaen title in 2008. "I look forward to a new challenge at Rosenborg, and I hope to build on the club's tradition of doing well in European competition," he said. Rosenborg play Swedish titleholders AIK in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round with the opening leg on Wednesday in Solna.
