Liverpool FC have strengthened their squad ahead of the start of the Premier League season by signing midfielder Christian Poulsen from Juventus for €5.5m.

The transfer fee for Poulsen, who has agreed a three-year contract, could rise by another €1.2m depending on appearances. Capped 77 times by Denmark and voted Danish player of the year in 2005, the Anfield recruit leaves Juventus after making 48 Serie A appearances in two seasons.

Poulsen, 30, had moved to Turin from Spain where he spent two years with Sevilla FC, winning the UEFA Cup in 2007. He previously featured for FC København in his native Denmark and then FC Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga. Liverpool take on Trabzonspor AŞ in the UEFA Europa League play-offs next week when Juventus play SK Sturm Graz. The Merseysiders' Premier League campaign begins at home to Arsenal FC on Sunday.
