Rangers sign Beattie from Stoke

Former England striker James Beattie has become Rangers FC's first senior signing for two years after moving to the Scottish champions from Premier League side Stoke City FC.

Rangers FC have signed former England striker James Beattie from Stoke City FC.

The 32-year-old has penned a two-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, after a transfer worth a reported €1.8m. Originally with Blackburn Rovers FC, Beattie made his name with Southampton FC between 1998 and 2005, scoring 76 goals in 235 games and earning five England caps. After two and a half seasons with Everton he moved to second-tier Sheffield United FC but returned to the top flight 18 months ago with Stoke.

Centre-forward Beattie, Rangers' first senior signing for two years, fills the space left by Kris Boyd and Nacho Novo, and joins a day before the start of the Glasgow club's Scottish Premier League title defence at home to Kilmarnock FC. "There was interest from other clubs but when you come here and speak to Walter Smith and have a look around, the decision was easy," said Beattie. Rangers enter the UEFA Champions League in the group stage.
