Spain bid for Glasgow glory

The world and European champions can expect a tough game in Scotland, with Spain seeking a first victory in Glasgow since 1974 as the sides meet again in UEFA EURO 2012 Group I.

They may have triumphed at UEFA EURO 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup but Spain cannot be sure of an easy ride against Scotland when they return to Hampden Park in qualifying Group I.

• Scotland's record in 11 games against Spain is W3 D4 L4 (W2 D1 L1 at home).

• The sides' two most recent meetings – both friendlies – ended in draws, Scotland earning a 0-0 stalemate in Madrid on 27 April 1988 and holding Spain 1-1 in Valencia on 3 September 2004.

• Scotland have had the better of the matches between the two nations in Glasgow, kicking off with a 4-2 triumph when the nations locked horns for the first time in a World Cup qualifier on 8 May 1957.

• Spain hit back with a 2-1 victory in a UEFA European Championship qualifier at Hampden Park on 20 November 1974, but they lost 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier on their next visit on 14 November 1984.
