Cristiano Ronaldo will be absent from Portugal's opening UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers after injuring his right ankle in Real Madrid CF's first Liga assignment on Sunday, the goalless draw at RCD Mallorca.

Tests confirmed that Ronaldo had suffered bruising and swelling around the ankle joint and would be missing for around three weeks, meaning he will sit out Portugal's Group H fixtures at home to Cyprus on Friday and away to Norway next Tuesday. Ronaldo is also expected to be unavailable for his Madrid side's matches against AFC Ajax in the UEFA Champions League and Real Sociedad de Fútbol and CA Osasuna in the Spanish league.
