Borussia Dortmund denied Paris Saint-Germain FC the chance to seal their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 32.

PSG knew victory would guarantee them one of the top two places in Group J, but though they extended their unbeaten European home record to 12 matches, it would prove a frustrating night. They lost their Group J lead to Sevilla FC but are still three points clear of Dortmund.

With many inside the Parc des Princes sporting Dortmund colours, the Bundesliga leaders enjoyed a warm reception, but PSG were clearly in no mood to be quite as welcoming. Mevlüt Erdinç could have put PSG ahead, but header over having got in front of Łukasz Piszczek to reach Ceará's cross.

Dortmund threatened sporadically with Kevin Grosskreutz's timid shot after Mario Götze's nimble footwork had thrown the home side off balance symptomatic of an unusually subdued first-half showing. Nenê's fleet of foot afforded PSG the greater thrust, and another incisive burst from the Brazilian supplied Erdinç, who missed the target.

Erdinç has struggled for goals this season, and though his first touch on Mathieu Bodmer's lobbed pass was sure, the vital element of luck again deserted him as the rapidly advancing Roman Weidenfeller blocked. At the other end Lucas Barrios dragged a shot across goal from the edge of the box and Dortmund were again indebted to Weidenfeller as he once more came out on top in a face-to-face encounter with Erdinç.

As PSG tired, Dortmund seized the initiative. Apoula Édel's sharp reflexes allowed him to tip over a ferocious Shinji Kagawa drive, and after Grosskreutz had seen a shot deflected agonisingly wide, the Cameroonian goalkeeper denied both Kagawa and Robert Lewandowski in a frantic finale. PSG's 1-1 draw at Dortmund means a win against Sevilla on 2 December would take them through.
