Servette sign Lombardo

UEFA Cup hopefuls Servette FC have signed Lausanne-Sports midfield player Massimo Lombardo.

UEFA Cup fourth-round participants Servette FC have signed Lausanne-Sports midfield player Massimo Lombardo.

Frustrating spell
The 29-year-old has spent a frustrating 18-month spell with Lausanne, as the club battles to avoid relegation from Switzerland's Nationalliga A. Lombardo, who has won two Swiss championships and a Swiss cup with Grasshopper-Club, scored six times in 49 appearances for Lausanne.

Promotion in Italy
The Swiss international, capped thirteen times by his country, also won promotion to Italy's Serie A with AC Perugia in 1998 and joined Lausanne from FC Lugano in 2000.

Valencia next
Having beaten SK Slavia Praha, Real Zaragoza and Hertha BSC Berlin in the first three rounds of the UEFA Cup, Servette now face a daunting two-legged tie against Spain's Valencia CF, the team beaten in the last two UEFA Champions League finals.
