The 25-year-old left-back has struggled to claim a regular place in the Juventus team and has not played in either Serie A or the UEFA Champions League this campaign. He made only five appearances last year following his move from Flamengo.
Strong reputation
Athirson had arrived in Europe with a strong reputation, being viewed by many as the long-term replacement for Roberto Carlos in the national team. The Rio-born player began his career with Flamengo but spent one season away with Santos FC in 1998. He has been capped four times by Brazil.
