• Still a teenager when his Real Sociedad side won back-to-back Spanish titles in 1981 and 1982, Bakero scored in the 4-2 penalty shoot-out success as his side beat Club Atlético de Madrid in the 1986/87 Copa del Rey final, joining a number of other Basque players at Barcelona in 1988.

• The attacking midfielder helped Barcelona win four Liga titles in a row from 1991 to 1994, leaving in 1997 having also won two Copa del Reys, two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, and the 1992 European Champion Clubs' Cup (the club's first) and UEFA Super Cup.

• After playing and then coaching in Mexico, he gained experience in less senior positions before taking over as coach of Atlético Malagueño, Málaga CF's reserve team, in January 2005, helping them escape relegation that season.

• Real re-hired him as director of football that summer and he was coach by the end of 2005/06, but lost his job after a disappointing start to the next season.

• Came to Poland in November 2009 to coach Polonia, saving them from relegation in his first season, but lost his job at the start of the following campaign; named Lech coach in November 2010, he kicked off his tenure with a memorable 3-1 UEFA Europa League win against Manchester City FC.
