• Started out as a striker before being converted to a sweeper at Cortuluá, prompting a move in 1998 to his home-town club Deportivo Cali, where his career took off with a Colombian title.

• Departed in 1999 for River Plate, with whom he won an Apertura and a Clausura championship in his three seasons in Buenos Aires.

• The Colombia captain made the first of over 70 appearances for his country in February 1999 and two years later helped them win the Copa América for the first time.

• Joined Nantes in January 2002, where his displays earned him the moniker 'El Rey' and, after two-and-a-half seasons, a transfer to PSG, whom he helped to the French Cup in 2006 and the Coupe de la Ligue two years later.

• After over 100 Ligue 1 outings for the capital club Yepes moved to Italy in summer 2008, where he impressed at the heart of Chievo's defence, helping the Flying Donkeys consolidate their Serie A status over two seasons.

• Signed for Milan in July 2010 as experienced cover for the first-choice central defensive pairing of Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva, making his debut against AS Bari (3-2) on 7 November 2010 and playing UEFA Champions League football for the first time against AFC Ajax (0-2) a month later.
