David Plizga scored the only goal of the game as UEFA EURO 2012 co-hosts Poland posted a narrow friendly victory against Moldova in Portugal on Sunday.

Making just his second appearance for his country, Plizga struck after 15 minutes, when Moldova goalkeeper Stanislav Namaşco allowed an ambitious effort from outside the penalty area to slip between his legs and into the net.

Moldova would have already been ahead themselves but for the intervention of Grzegorz Sandomierski, who did well to deny Anatolie Doroş. Indeed Sandomierski, who has been instrumental in Jagiellonia Białystok's surprise rise to the top of the Polish First Division, had an outstanding match, coming to his side's rescue on several occasions.

Though coach Franciszek Smuda's experimental lineup of solely Poland-based players missed chances, with striker Dawid Nowak spurning a particularly good opening, Moldova came away the most frustrated of the two sides after twice threatening a second-half equaliser.

Plizga could have given the scoreline a flattering veneer in the last remaining seconds when clean through on goal, but the Zagłębie Lubin striker was unable to beat Namaşco a second time.
