Stekelenburg warm-up drill

Presenter 1: Dutch international Maarten Stekelenburg is regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe and now he wants to help YOU improve your game… Here he presents a simple training drill that you can use with your coach or a team-mate to improve your handling technique. (15 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 1: To improve your technique you should decide on exercises together with your coach, like the one we will show you now. My coach will hit around 6 balls at me at full strength from about 8 metres, and you need to grab hold of them. Personally I think this is the best way to improve your technique. (15 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 2: As you can see I don’t let the ball go…. (2 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 3: As you can see he tries to shoot harder each time. (2 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 4: There are also balls which you can’t keep hold of, and then I think this is the best way to deal with it. (4 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 5: If you put the ball out and give away a corner then you can reorganise things, so actually you’re not giving much away. (5 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 6: When you catch the ball, the idea is to get behind it as much as possible. There are also balls you can see are going wide; you should let those ones go, so your team keeps possession. (10 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 7: As you can see, you have to keep reacting to the ball. (2 secs)

Maarten Stekelenburg 8: The advice I want to give you is to train very hard, listen carefully to your coach, and never give up, that is the most important thing. And don’t forget, have fun. (8 secs)
