Shevchenko dismissed as Braga hold Dynamo

FC Dynamo Kyiv 1-1 SC Braga
Yuri Semin's team took an early lead but head to Portugal on level terms having played the final half-hour without Andriy Shevchenko.

SC Braga came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw at FC Dynamo Kyiv in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League quarter-final tie.

Trailing to Andriy Yarmolenko's sixth-minute opener, Braga rallied and equalised soon after when Oleh Gusev inadvertently turned into his own net – only the Portuguese side's second European away goal since the start of the UEFA Champions League group stage. The score remained level ahead of next week's return, when Dynamo will be without Andriy Shevchenko – sent off on the hour for a second booking having come on at half-time.

Yuri Semin's team are unbeaten in their last seven European home games and took little time to find their stride, Yarmolenko heading back across Artur after a fine run and cross from Gusev. Artem Kravets spurned a chance to double Dynamo's lead, and moments later it had vanished as Gusev deflected the ball in after Braga striker Alan and Dynamo defender Ognjen Vukojević tussled to connect with Hugo Viana's corner.

Dynamo were far from deflated and should have restored their advantage on 16 minutes when Artem Milevskiy's cute back-heel located Yarmolenko, whose shot was superbly turned behind by Artur. The Braga keeper made further saves to deny Gusev's long-range shot and – most athletically of all – Kravets' header.

Shevchenko was introduced at half-time in an attempt to add the finishing touch to Dynamo's dominance, but the talismanic forward was dismissed just after the hour having received two yellow cards in the space of eight minutes.

Domingos Paciência's charges sensed their chance but never found top gear despite their numerical advantage, Sílvio's fizzing shot and Lima's wayward header their best opportunities. They nevertheless hold sway ahead of the second leg, with SL Benfica or PSV Eindhoven awaiting in the last four.
