Marco Ruben

Villarreal CF

Clubs: CA Rosario Central, CA River Plate, Villarreal CF, RC Recreativo de Huelva (loan)

• A free-scoring striker with his first club, Rosario, Marco Ruben was recruited by Buenos Aires heavyweights River Plate in January 2007.

• Spent a year with River, scoring seven league goals, before Villarreal brought him to Europe, only to dispatch him immediately on loan to Recreativo.

• Scored four times in his first half-season with the Huelva side, including a memorable double in a 2-2 home draw with FC Barcelona, and was retained for the whole of the following campaign, in which he managed just three further goals as Recreativo finished bottom.

• Returned to Villarreal for 2009/10 but played mostly for their B team, scoring 18 goals in 31 Segunda División outings

• Settled at last in the Villarreal first team in 2010/11 and found the net three times in Europe before registering his first Liga goal – in a 4-2 defeat by Real Madrid CF on 9 January 2011, a full three years after his arrival at El Madrigal.
