• Made his Atlético debut in 2008/09 and by the following campaign was a first-team regular, making 26 Liga starts.

• Part of the Rojiblancos side that won the 2010 UEFA Europa League and UEFA Super Cup, starting both the final of the former competition and the season curtain-raiser in Monaco.

• Opened the scoring in Spain's 3-0 victory against Croatia in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off second leg and was ever-present in Denmark the following summer as La Roja won the European title.

• Came on as a substitute in the 2012 UEFA Europa League final in Bucharest and two weeks later made his senior Spain debut in a pre-UEFA EURO 2012 friendly against Serbia.

• Joined Mönchengladbach on a five-year deal in June 2012.
