Switzerland midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta spoke of his pride at scoring two goals at Wembley to put UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying Group G high-fliers England on the back foot – and also his disappointment that the visitors were not able to hold onto their advantage.

An entertaining 2-2 draw at Wembley was notable for the double salvo unleashed by Barnetta in the space of three minutes in the first half. He struck twice from direct free-kicks to stun England goalkeeper Joe Hart and his defenders. "Of course I was proud to score twice at Wembley," Barnetta told UEFA.com, "but if you lead 2-0 you should bring the victory home and we were not able to do that."

The Swiss players agreed that if they had held the 2-0 lead until at least half-time it would have been a different story. Johan Djourou conceded that his tackle on Arsenal FC team-mate Jack Wilshere warranted a penalty kick from which Frank Lampard immediately cut the deficit but said his team could take heart from their performance.

"We came to Wembley to play and not many teams have done that before," Djourou said. "We gave England a lot of trouble by using the ball well and that's something new for us because before we have struggled to make a few passes."

England only remain joint top of Group G, six points clear of Switzerland, because Montenegro were held 1-1 by Bulgaria. Wilshere was relieved that his side were not punished more. "No one likes to be beaten from set pieces and that was the low point of the game for us but we showed good character to come back and in the second half we were unlucky not to go on and win the game," he said.

Ashley Young was brought on at the start of the second half and it was his fine shot which drew England level. "He was a bit unlucky not to get a starting place but he showed good character in coming on and playing like he did and we are all delighted for Ashley," Wilshere added. "It can only be good for English football that we have players like him."

John Terry said England's next qualifier, away to Bulgaria on 2 September was now "a must-win game". The captain added: "We were disappointing in the first half, we did not get out of the blocks and the tempo was a little slow. For the first goal there were enough of us in the box to clear it and we should be dealing with stuff like that. But we showed a lot of character to come back into the game and it was disappointing that we did not go on to win it."
