Adrián strengthens adidas Golden Boot claims

Adrián López is the firm favourite to claim the adidas Golden Boot award for the Under-21 finals' leading scorer after taking his tally to five with a double in the semi-final win against Belarus.

Adrián López may be the toast of Spain after scoring twice in the semi-final victory over Belarus, but the striker is also on course to claim the adidas Golden Boot award after taking his tournament tally to five.

The honour will be presented to the top marksman at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Denmark. Adrián registered three times as Spain won Group B and added two more on Wednesday: an 89th-minute equaliser from Jeffren Suárez's cross, and a fine downward header 15 minutes into extra time following Diego Capel's centre.

Players finishing second and third in the scoring chart will also be awarded with silver and bronze boots by adidas. Switzerland's Admir Mehmedi has three goals; Adrián's Spain team-mate Juan Mata has two along with Andrei Voronkov, who broke the deadlock for Belarus in Viborg with an overhead kick, Czech Republic captain Bořek Dočkal and Danny Welbeck of England.

Sweden's Marcus Berg holds the record for the most goals scored at a U21 final tournament having struck seven in the 2009 edition on home soil.

In the event of a tie
While goals scored will always be the first criterion in deciding the leading marksman, further parameters will be used to separate players with the same goal totals – firstly assists and then minutes played (with the player boasting the better goals to minutes on the pitch ratio taking precedence).
