Madrid make move for Lens teenager Varane

Real Madrid CF have swooped to bring French Under-21 international defender Raphaël Varane to the Santiago Bernabéu from RC Lens in a transfer costing approximately €10m.

Real Madrid CF have signed promising central defender Raphaël Varane from RC Lens for a fee reported to be in the region of €10m.

The 18-year-old – who scored two goals in 23 appearances in his debut Ligue 1 season last term – moves to the Santiago Bernabéu on a six-year deal and declared himself "exceptionally happy" to be teaming up with coach José Mourinho. "It's a huge pleasure to be here," the French Under-21 international said shortly before passing a medical at his new club. Madrid will enter next season's UEFA Champions League at the group stage.
