Mifsud eager to make waves at Valletta

Striker Michael Mifsud is backing Valletta FC to become "the first Maltese club to go through the first two rounds" of the UEFA Champions League after joining them as a free agent.

National team captain Michael Mifsud has signed for Maltese champions Valletta FC on a four-year deal ahead of their first qualifying round decider against SP Tre Fiori tonight.

The 30-year-old striker rejoins Valletta, where he scored seven goals in seven Premier League games towards the end of the 2009/10 campaign, as a free agent. However, a clause in his contract means the former Sliema Wanderers FC player can leave if he receives interest from an overseas club.

Mifsud, who has already played in Germany, Norway and England with 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Lillestrøm SK, Coventry City FC and Barnsley FC, told UEFA.com: "I am very pleased I have signed for Valletta for the second time in my career. If everything goes well in the second leg against Tre Fiori, I will be part of the squad for the second qualifying round against Lithuanian champions [FK] Ekranas. I will do my utmost to ensure Valletta go into the history books as the first Maltese club to go through the first two rounds of this competition."

Valletta lead 3-0 from the away leg, going into tonight's encounter with San Marinese titleholders Tre Fiori in Corradino. After his brief spell at Valletta two seasons ago, Mifsud played for Qormi FC in the latter part of the last campaign, scoring seven times in five league matches.
