FC Twente took a significant step towards the UEFA Champions League play-offs after completing a two-goal victory against FC Vaslui.

The third round qualifying tie was played in Arnhem following the closure of the Twente Stadion due an incident earlier this month in which a section of the new roof collapsed, but Marc Janko had no problems settling into his new surroundings as he scored twice against the Romanian visitors.

The match could have taken a very different turn had Adailton enjoyed better luck with just over a quarter of an hour played. Vaslui's Brazilian playmaker sent a curling free-kick beyond Nikolay Mihaylov from 18 metres only for his attempt to cannon back off the crossbar. Twente reacted by throwing men forward and on 29 minutes Janko was cursing his luck when his powerful header flew wide.

Within four minutes, however, Janko's fortune changed as he took his chance from the penalty spot after former Bologna FC man Adailton had fouled Thilo Leugers. The tall Austrian international doubled his tally 12 minutes into the second half when he scored at the second attempt after his header, from Wout Brama's cross, came back off a post.

By now the hosts were in control and after Adailton − trying to make amends for his earlier transgression − had seen his close-range header somehow repelled by Mihaylov, substitute Ola John almost made it 3-0 with a shot which flew narrowly past the far post. The two teams meet again in Peatra Neamt next week.
