Agüero agrees Manchester City switch

UEFA Champions League contenders Manchester City FC have completed the signing of Argentina striker Sergio Agüero from Club Atlético de Madrid in a deal reportedly worth €40m.

Manchester City FC have boosted their attacking options significantly by signing Argentinian international Sergio Agüero from Club Atlético de Madrid in a deal reported to be worth €40m.

Agüero, who passed a medical in Manchester on Wednesday, has agreed a five-year contract and will wear the No16 shirt. His first game for his new club could come as soon as the weekend, having been included in the squad which will contest the inaugural Dublin Super Cup friendly tournament.

The 23-year-old enjoyed five successful seasons with Atlético following a switch from CA Independiente in 2006. He scored 75 goals in 175 Liga appearances, in addition to five in two UEFA Champions League campaigns.

The skilful striker – City's third signing of the summer following the arrival of defenders Gaël Clichy and Stefan Savić from Arsenal FC and FK Partizan respectively –  also helped Atlético win the UEFA Europa League in 2010 and scored in their UEFA Super Cup victory against FC Internazionale Milano a few months later.

Agüero – nicknamed 'Kun' – has scored 13 goals in 31 international appearances, four of which were recorded at the Copa América earlier this month in his homeland. City will make their UEFA Champions League debut in the group stage after finishing third in the Premier League last season.

Agüero's absence will be felt all the more keenly at Atlético with his some-time strike partner Diego Costa having been ruled out for six months after undergoing surgery to repair damaged ligaments and cartilage in his right knee. The 22-year-old Brazilian scored six goals in 28 Liga appearances last season as his side finished seventh in the Spanish standings.
