Bosnia and Herzegovina deny Germany a perfect ten

Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-4 Germany
The top two in Group 1 produced an absorbing encounter, with the hosts preventing Germany from finishing their campaign with ten wins out of ten.

Bosnia and Herzegovina put in an impressive display to hold Germany to a 4-4 draw in Sarajevo and deny the visitors a perfect UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 1 record.

Germany had won their previous nine qualifiers and were long since assured of a play-off place as section winners. Bosnia and Herzegovina, though – second in the section and in contention for a best runners-up spot – stopped them making it ten out of ten thanks in part to Milan Djurić's hat-trick.

They were 3-1 to the good at the break and though Sebastian Polter and Moritz Leitner drew Germany level, Srdjan Grahovac looked to have struck the winner. However, Polter's 87th-minute effort ensured the spoils were shared.

It was a tough blow for Vlado Jagodić's side, in front through Djurić's header inside 11 minutes. Jan Tilman Kirchhoff drew Germany level but another Djurić header – and a 38th-minute conversion from Miroslav Stevanović's cross – gave the hosts a two-goal cushion.

It did not last long, though, Polter's precision strike halving Germany's arrears before Leitner's powerful 25-metre shot levelled the scores. Grahovac seemed to have settled matters with 16 minutes left but Polter's second rounded off the scoring and ensured Germany ended their group campaign with an unbeaten, if not unblemished, record.
