Bastian Schweinsteiger seems certain to miss FC Bayern München's two remaining fixtures in UEFA Champions League Group A after fracturing his collarbone during Wednesday's 3-2 victory against SSC Napoli.

The 27-year-old midfielder sustained the injury in the 51st minute as he landed heavily following an aerial challenge with Gökhan Inler. Club doctors expect Schweinsteiger to need up to six weeks to recover from surgery, meaning he will miss the 22 November visit of Villarreal CF and 7 December trip to Manchester City FC plus Germany's upcoming friendlies against Ukraine and the Netherlands (11 and 15 November).

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said: "His injury will hit us hard. I said before the match that he's not only a very important player but he dictates the flow of our game in midfield. He's in outstanding form. So far we've been able to compensate for injured players; I hope this will continue in the coming weeks." Section leaders Bayern need a point to reach the knockout rounds.
