AEK Larnaca appoint Vlemmings

Leon Vlemmings, who has worked at PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord, has taken over as coach of AEK Larnaca FC ahead of their decisive Group J trip to FC Steaua Bucureşti.

Leon Vlemmings has taken over as coach of AEK Larnaca FC to replace fellow Dutchman Ton Caanen.

Caanen stepped down just under a fortnight ago after a disappointing start to the Cypriot season. Vlemmings, 41, is thought to have been the personal choice of AEK club manager Jordi Cruyff to take over at the UEFA Europa League hopefuls.

"AEK announces the appointment of Dutch coach Leon Vlemmings until the end of the season," a club statement read. "AEK would like to welcome Leon Vlemmings into its family and to wish him every success for the work he is about to undertake."

Retiring as a player aged 22, Vlemmings was a youth coach at PSV Eindhoven for nine years before moving to FC Eindhoven, where he led the first team between 2001 and 2005. He then acted as assistant for the Netherlands Under-19s, NAC Breda and Feyenoord, where Vlemmings also had spells in caretaker charge before leaving last summer.

His new side lie fifth in Cyprus and are bottom of UEFA Europa League Group J but can go through on 14 December if they get three points at FC Steaua Bucureşti and Maccabi Haifa FC – who AEK beat 2-1 on Thursday – do not defeat section winners FC Schalke 04.
