PSV Eindhoven have announced that coach Fred Rutten will leave his post when his contract expires at the end of the season.

Rutten, 49, took charge of the Dutch outfit in 2009 but has been unable to emulate the success of his predecessors, Guus Hiddink and Ronald Koeman, who won four successive titles between 2004/05 and 2007/08. "It is time for PSV and me to let each other go," said Rutten. "My upcoming departure is surely going to have a serious impact on me."

PSV technical manager Marcel Brands said: "Fred Rutten told the board a number of weeks ago he was thinking of leaving the club and he has now made a final decision. I personally regret his decision. I don't doubt for a second Fred Rutten's commitment for the rest of the season. He is a true professional. He and the players alike want to win prizes and that will not change."

The Boeren currently lie second in the Eredivisie, one point adrift of AZ Alkmaar at the summit, and face Trabzonspor AŞ in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 with the first leg to be played in Turkey on 16 February before the return in the Netherlands a week later.
