Mourinho upbeat despite late CSKA leveller

"I'm not happy but I'm not all that sad," said José Mourinho after Real Madrid CF conceded a late equaliser at PFC CSKA Moskva, whose coach Leonid Slutski rued attacking failings.

We made a poor mistake in the first half, otherwise it would have been 0-0. We executed our defensive plan pretty well but failed to perform up front. The game was broken up and quite patchy, and one of those patches resulted in us scoring. We lacked a man in the middle of the park who could direct our play.

We were without [midfielders] Keisuke Honda and Pavel Mamaev, so Wernbloom became one of our heroes. He scored and performed brilliantly overall. It's a bit tough for Ahmed Musa at the moment, but he tried his best and he can play better. After Honda's introduction we became more dangerous in attack. Today he played even longer than he actually can physically. I hope he will be ready for 90 minutes in Madrid.

We went for it in the end and brought on some attacking players, increased the pressure on Madrid's defence and finally converted our last set piece. Our chances? Two years ago we started with a 1-1 draw at home to Sevilla and were underdogs after the first leg. Madrid are still favourites but the outcome of this match gives us hope for a good result over the two legs.

Having led and conceded so late, it doesn't leave a good taste in the mouth, but at the same time it's not a drama. Last year against Lyon it was a similar situation at this stage and we managed to win the second leg at home. We're confident we can do so again this time.

It's not a bad result. Without having done anything out of this world we had chances to score a second. I'm not happy but I'm not all that sad. Tonight's result means we must step up for the second leg. Our opponents made things difficult for us but didn't do all that much to threaten an equaliser.

That said, they played a very hard and serious game. Their goal will give them a lot of joy. I'd be happy if all our away legs finished 1-1. I brought Raúl Albiol on for Mesut Özil because I saw it as a good move as CSKA had a tall player [substitute Tomáš Necid] alongside Seydou Doumbia [up front]. I saw Albiol as the ideal player to defend that situation. I liked his attitude and the way he did what he had to do.

There are goals that come from a loss of concentration at dead-ball situations that are often easy to identify but I'm not sure that was the case today. I was quite far away and couldn't tell you at this moment.
