Paul Scholes has reversed his decision to retire after approaching Sir Alex Ferguson about playing for Manchester United FC until the end of the season.

The 37-year-old midfielder announced after his cameo in the 2011 UEFA Champions League final defeat by FC Barcelona that he was hanging up his boots following 676 appearances for the Red Devils, the club where he spent his entire career.

A ten-time Premier League winner during his time at Old Trafford, Scholes made his comeback as a second-half substitute in United's 3-2 victory against Manchester City FC in the FA Cup on Sunday. His return will compensate for the loss of Darren Fletcher to illness and Tom Cleverley, who has not played since 29 October because of an ankle problem.

Sir Alex said: "It's fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It's always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It's terrific to have him back."

News of Scholes' return was only announced an hour before Sunday's cup derby. The former England international, who earned 66 caps for his country, added: "I've been pretty clear since I stopped playing that I miss it. I'm delighted the manager feels I can still make a contribution to the team and I'm looking forward to playing my part in trying to bring more success to this great club."
